Meet Donna Yurgel, the “mushroom lady”, owner of Belly Acres Farm.

Donna claims she was a city girl until she met her husband 38 years ago and was “countrified”. She hasn’t looked back since! Donna got the idea of becoming a mushroom grower after watching a show on Discovery Channel and taking a vacation which brought her to Kennett Square in Pennsylvania, the mushroom capital of the world. “The first 18 months were really a giant science experiment”, stated Donna. She now grows Shitake mushrooms on sawdust logs, in an enclosed environment so the atmosphere can be controlled and she does not have to use herbicides or pesticides. Donna sells fresh or dried Shitake mushrooms, mushroom powder which is used to flavor soups and stews, and even Shitake Mushroom dog biscuits! Her mushrooms can also be found at the Willimantic Food Co-op and Fiddle Heads Food Co-op in New London. Donna is a regular at the summer market where she sells fresh eggs and produce along with her mushroom products. When asked about the unusual name of Belly Acres for a farm Donna replied, “If you ever heard our chickens in the morning laying eggs you would understand!”
